Khevsureti: A Land of Fortresses and Ancient Traditions

Khevsureti, meaning "land of gorges" , is a historical and ethnographic region in eastern Georgia, straddling both the northern and southern slopes of the Great Caucasus Mountains. This remote area is characterized by deep gorges, steep slopes, and a challenging climate. Historically, Khevsureti held immense strategic importance, with the Khevsurs defending Georgia's northern borders for centuries. They were renowned for their combat skills, unique weaponry, and steel-working techniques. The region is divided into Piraketa (Nearer) and Pirikita (Further) Khevsureti, separated by the Caucasus ridge. Today, visitors are drawn to Khevsureti for its well-preserved medieval villages like Shatili and Mutso, ancient traditions, and breathtaking natural wonders. Shatili, a UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List site, is a stunning fortress village constructed from stone and mortar. Its architecture is unique, with houses built close together and defense towers that once protected the village and surrounding areas. Mutso, another impressive fortress village, is perched on a steep cliff and offers breathtaking views. The village is currently undergoing restoration efforts. Beyond the villages, Khevsureti offers incredible hiking opportunities, including the popular trek from Omalo to Shatili. The Abudelauri Lakes, three colorful alpine lakes, are another major attraction, accessible via a hike from the village of Roshka. Other notable sites include the Anatori crypts, Lebaiskari Tower, and Datvisjvari Pass. Despite its conversion to Christianity in the Middle Ages, Khevsureti retains strong elements of pre-Christian pagan beliefs and traditions. The Khevsur dialect of Georgian also closely resembles medieval literary Georgian.
