Public Transport
The primary way to reach Khevsureti via public transport is by taking a marshrutka (minivan) from Tbilisi's Didube bus station to Shatili. As of July 2025, the marshrutka departs once a week, on Saturdays at 10:00 AM. The journey takes approximately 4.5-5 hours. Tickets cost 30 GEL per person, one-way. Be aware that this service operates seasonally, typically from mid-June to the end of September, and is subject to weather conditions. Confirm the schedule in advance. From Shatili, further travel to other villages requires arranging a local driver.
Taxi
Taxis can be hired from Tbilisi to Shatili, offering a more direct and flexible route. The journey takes around 3 hours. Expect to pay between $60-$75 for a standard taxi. Private transfer services are also available, with prices starting from $185 USD. These can be pre-booked and offer the convenience of airport pickup. Keep in mind that the road can be challenging, and an experienced driver is recommended.
Driving
Driving to Khevsureti from Tbilisi involves taking the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi highway and then turning towards Zhinvali Reservoir and the road to Barisakho. The drive to Shatili takes at least 4 hours from the outskirts of Tbilisi. A 4WD vehicle is highly recommended due to the unsealed, narrow, and windy mountain roads. Be prepared for potential hazards such as mudslides and limited petrol stations. There are no tolls on this route.
