    Discover more about Laghami Church

Laghami Church, also known as the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, is located in the village of Laghami in the Mestia Municipality. This remarkable two-story basilica stands as a testament to the rich cultural and religious history of the Svaneti region. The church's architecture is a fascinating blend of different eras. The first story, dedicated to Saint Martyr Barbara, dates back to the 9th century and features a simple, hall-type design with a flat altar. In the 14th century, the church was expanded with a second story, a larger hall-type structure with a western extension. The contrasting construction materials—broken cliff rocks for the first story and well-hewn travertine cubes for the second—add to its unique character. Inside, visitors are greeted by a stunning collection of frescoes depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments, as well as various saints. The upper frescoes are particularly noteworthy, representing Byzantine-style art from the Palaiologoi era (1262-1453 CE). Secular portraits of the Kirkishlianis, a local noble family, can also be found. The church also houses a 13th-century gold and silver metalwork icon of the Saviour. Located on a mountain slope, the church offers a serene atmosphere and stunning views of the surrounding Caucasus Mountains.
