Lamaria Church: Guardian of Ushguli

The Lamaria Church, also known as the Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God, stands as a testament to Ushguli's rich history and enduring faith. Dating back to the 9th or 10th century, this medieval Georgian Orthodox church is more than just a religious site; it's a cultural landmark deeply intertwined with the identity of the Svan people. Located in the village of Zhibiani, one of the four villages comprising Ushguli, the church occupies a prominent position atop a hill. One such tale recounts the story of a nobleman who sought to impose his rule on the free people of Ushguli and was subsequently murdered within the church.
