Discover more about Narikala Fortress

Narikala Fortress, often called the 'Mother Fortress of Tbilisi,' stands as one of the city's oldest and most prominent landmarks. Perched high on a hill overlooking the Mtkvari River, the fortress is visible from nearly every part of Tbilisi, offering visitors breathtaking views of the capital. Its strategic location, where the riverbed narrows, has made it a crucial defensive point throughout history. The fortress dates back to the 4th century when it served as a Persian citadel. Expanded significantly by Arab emirs in the 8th century, Narikala has seen numerous rulers, including Georgians, Turks, and Persians, each leaving their mark on its structure. The name 'Narikala' is believed to come from the Persian words 'narin' (small) and 'kala' (fortress). Over time, it was also known as 'Shuris-tsikhe,' meaning 'The Rival Fortress'. Inside the fortress, visitors can explore the St. Nicholas Church, originally built in the 12th century and reconstructed in 1996. The church's interior is adorned with frescoes depicting biblical scenes and Georgian history. Although a major earthquake in 1827 and a subsequent explosion of Russian munitions caused significant damage, the main walls of Narikala remain well-preserved, offering a tangible link to Tbilisi's past. Currently (July 2025), Narikala Fortress is undergoing renovations and is scheduled to reopen at the end of summer 2025.
