Tbilisi Zoo: A Wildlife Haven in the City

Tbilisi Zoo, established in 1927, is the oldest and largest zoo in Georgia. Situated in the Vere River valley, the zoo is home to around 300 species, showcasing both native Caucasian fauna and exotic animals from across the globe. Visitors can marvel at white lions, Asian elephants, Persian leopards, and various bird species, including predators, peacocks, and parrots. The zoo also features an Exotarium with colorful fish and reptiles. Throughout its history, the Tbilisi Zoo has experienced both prosperity and adversity. In its prime, during the 1970s, it housed over 1,000 animals and welcomed more than 500,000 visitors annually. However, the economic collapse and political unrest in post-Soviet Georgia led to a decline, with funding cuts impacting the zoo's upkeep and animal welfare. In 2015, a severe flood caused significant damage, resulting in the loss of many animals and the escape of others. Despite these challenges, the zoo has persevered, reopening after the flood and continuing its mission of conservation and education. Today, Tbilisi Zoo is committed to protecting and conserving animals, with a focus on endangered species. The zoo participates in breeding programs for species like the red deer, wild goat, and West-Caucasian ibex, with the goal of reintroducing them into the wild. Visitors can explore different sections, including Predators and Primate-Rodents, Birds, Ungulates, and the Exotarium. The zoo also offers a Children's Education Center, providing learning opportunities for young visitors.
