Discover more about Samtavisi Cathedral

Nestled in the Shida Kartli region of eastern Georgia, approximately 45 km from Tbilisi, lies the Samtavisi Cathedral. This 11th-century Georgian Orthodox cathedral stands as a remarkable example of medieval Georgian architecture. The cathedral is a prime illustration of the Georgian interpretation of the cross-in-square church design, influencing many churches built during Georgia's medieval golden age. The history of Samtavisi dates back to the 5th century when the first church was erected on the site. In the 6th century, Isidore of Samtavisi, one of the Assyrian Fathers, founded a monastery here. The current cathedral was constructed between 1025 and 1030, replacing an earlier basilica. The architect was Hilarion, son of Vane Kanchaeli. Throughout its history, Samtavisi Cathedral has endured damage from earthquakes and has undergone several restorations. The exterior of the cathedral is distinguished by its ornamental blind arcading. The eastern facade, in particular, showcases the original, elaborate decorations, including a large cross, ornamented windows, and a relief of a griffin. Inside, the cathedral features 17th-century frescoes and the tomb of Saint Isidore of Samtavisi. The complex also includes a bell tower dating back to the 17th century, a bishop's residence, and the remnants of other structures.
