Discover more about Tsughrughasheni

Tsughrughasheni Monastery, also known as Sioni Monastery, is a captivating Orthodox church located in the Bolnisi District of Georgia. Situated approximately 2 kilometers from the Bolnisi Sioni Basilica, it rests on the right bank of the Bolnisistsqali River, offering picturesque views and a serene atmosphere. The monastery dates back to the 13th century, constructed between 1212 and 1222, during the reign of King George IV Lasha of the Bagrationi dynasty. The church's architecture bears resemblance to other Georgian medieval monuments like Betania, Kvatakhevi, and Pitareti, though it is smaller with a distinctively tall cupola. The façades are adorned with well-hewn ashlar, while the interior walls, intended for plaster and paint, have a coarser finish. Tsughrughasheni stands out with its complex stone ornaments, particularly on its cupola. The interior, though bearing damaged frescoes, once showcased stunning biblical narratives, offering insights into the region's artistic heritage. Three inscriptions on the walls reveal the architect's name and the monument's construction during King George IV's reign. Legend connects the church to King Lasha-Giorgi's tragic love story, who built it overlooking his beloved's grave after the kingdom opposed their marriage. Today, Tsughrughasheni Monastery provides a tranquil escape, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its spiritual and historical significance. The monastery is open daily from 9 AM to 7 PM, allowing ample time for exploration and reflection. Modest attire is recommended when visiting this sacred site.
