Bodbe Monastery, officially the Monastery of St. Nino at Bodbe, is a Georgian Orthodox nunnery located just 2 kilometers from Sighnaghi in the Kakheti region. This sacred site holds immense historical and religious importance, primarily because it is where St. Nino, the Enlightener of Georgia, spent her final years and was laid to rest. Founded in the 4th century, the monastery has undergone several transformations, with significant remodeling in the 17th century. Today, it serves as a nunnery and remains a major pilgrimage destination in Georgia. The monastery complex includes the Cathedral of St. George, the Cathedral of St. Nino, a bell tower, and a spring, all set against the backdrop of the Alazani Valley.According to legend, St. Nino's final resting place could not be moved to Mtskheta after her death, as even a hundred men and oxen couldn't budge the coffin. Consequently, she was buried where her tent stood, and a church was built on that very spot. Over the centuries, Bodbe Monastery has been a focal point of Georgian religious and cultural life, with Georgian kings often choosing it as the site for their coronation.The monastery also functioned as a hub of learning, housing a theological school and one of the largest depositories of religious books in Georgia. Although the Soviets closed the monastery in 1924, it was reopened as a convent in 1991 and has since undergone extensive restoration.
