Discover more about Gremi's Archangels' Complex

Nestled in the heart of Georgia's Kakheti region, the Gremi Archangels' Complex is a captivating journey into the country's past. Founded in 1565 by King Levan of Kakheti, Gremi served as a vibrant trading town on the Silk Road and the capital of the Kakheti Kingdom during the 16th and 17th centuries. However, its prosperity was cut short when Shah Abbas I of Persia razed it in 1615. While Gremi never fully recovered, the surviving complex remains an important symbol of Georgian architecture and resilience. The complex consists of the Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, a three-story castle, and a bell tower, all encircled by fortified walls. The Church of the Archangels, constructed in 1565, showcases a blend of traditional Georgian masonry and Iranian architectural influences. Inside, visitors can admire the well-preserved frescoes, including portraits of King Levan, his wife Queen Tinatin, and their son. King Levan's tomb is also located within the church. The bell tower houses a museum displaying archaeological artifacts and a 16th-century cannon. Exploring the grounds offers panoramic views of the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus Mountains. Visitors can wander through the ruins of the royal residence, wine cellars, and bathhouses, imagining life in this once-thriving city. The complex also features a secret passage to the Intsobi River, adding to its mystique. Today, Gremi is a popular tourist destination, offering a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty.
