Kumurdo Cathedral: A Testament to Georgian Faith and Architecture

Nestled on the Javakheti Plateau, 12 km southwest of Akhalkalaki, Kumurdo Cathedral is a striking monument to Georgia's rich religious and architectural heritage. Constructed in 964 during the reign of King Leon III, this Georgian Orthodox cathedral was commissioned by Bishop Ioane. The architect, Sacotsari, created a unique design, making it one of the first churches to showcase architectural features that would become prominent in the 11th-13th centuries. Kumurdo Cathedral held immense cultural, educational, and religious importance during the Middle Ages. The cathedral's design incorporates a blend of Byzantine and local architectural styles. The exterior boasts intricately carved stone facades, while the interior once featured vibrant frescoes, with original paintings still visible in the apse. A relief portrait of Queen Gurandukht, mother of King Bagrat III, is carved on one of the eastern squinches. The temple is designed in the form of a Greek cross, encircled by five semicircular apses. Inscriptions in the ancient Georgian Asomtavruli script adorn the walls, recounting the cathedral's construction and consecration. These inscriptions also mention prayers for the builders and details about the construction of the southern gallery under Bagrat IV. Over the centuries, the cathedral has undergone several restorations, including efforts in the 20th century. Although the dome is missing, a project for its full reconstruction was developed in 2015. Visiting Kumurdo offers a glimpse into traditional Georgian life and hospitality.
