Discover more about Madatapa lake

Madatapa Lake, situated in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia, close to the Armenian border, presents a captivating blend of natural beauty and ecological significance. At an elevation of 2,108 meters, this high-altitude lake is a haven for diverse bird species and a serene retreat for travelers. The lake's surroundings are part of the Madatapa Managed Reserve, within the larger Javakheti Protected Area. This area is recognized as a Wetland of International Importance, protected under the Ramsar Convention. The lake's location along the African-Eurasian flyway makes it a prime spot for observing migratory and nesting birds, especially during the warmer months. Birdwatchers can spot various species, including the Dalmatian pelican, great white pelicans, common pochards, and common cranes. A birdwatching tower on Madatapa Cape offers an excellent vantage point. The lake itself spans 8.78 square kilometers with a maximum depth of 1.7 meters. Fed by rain, snow, and groundwater, its shores are adorned with water-loving plants. While the lake was historically known to be fish-free, a population of Paravan common carp has thrived since the mid-1990s. Visitors can explore the nearby village of Gorelovka, known for its unique Doukhobors architecture and cultural heritage. The surrounding villages of Zhdanovakani, Epremovka, Troitskoye, and Sameba each offer their own distinct character. Despite its tranquil setting, Madatapa Lake is located in an earthquake-prone region of the Caucasus. The lake typically freezes over from November to April, transforming the landscape into a white expanse.
