    Discover more about Aachen Cathedral

Aachen Cathedral, or Aachener Dom, is a captivating landmark in Aachen, Germany, holding immense historical and religious significance. Constructed over centuries, its core is Charlemagne's Palatine Chapel, dating back to the Carolingian period. The cathedral showcases a unique fusion of architectural styles, primarily Carolingian-Romanesque and Gothic, reflecting its evolving importance. Charlemagne initiated the Palatine Chapel's construction around 796 AD, with Odo of Metz credited as the architect. The chapel was modeled after Byzantine structures like the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna. After Charlemagne's canonization, the cathedral became a major pilgrimage site. From 936 to 1531, it served as the coronation church for thirty-one German kings and twelve queens. The Gothic choir hall, added later in 1414, provides a stunning contrast with its large windows. The cathedral suffered damage during World War II, but its basic structure remained intact. In 1978, it became one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites, recognized for its exceptional artistry, architecture, and central role in the Holy Roman Empire's history. Inside, visitors can marvel at the Barbarossa Chandelier, donated by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, and the Shrine of Charlemagne, which holds the emperor's remains. The Aachen Cathedral Treasury is considered one of Northern Europe's most important ecclesiastical treasuries. Pilgrims flock to see the four significant relics displayed every seven years: the dress of the Virgin Mary, the swaddling clothes of Jesus, the beheading cloth of John the Baptist, and the loincloth of Christ. Today, Aachen Cathedral continues to be a place of worship and a symbol of European history. Visitors can explore the cathedral for free, while the Treasury and guided tours require tickets. Guided tours in English are available daily at 2 PM, offering insights into the cathedral's rich past and architectural marvels.
