Discover more about Ponttor

The Ponttor, historically known as the Brückenpforte or Brückenthor, stands as a prominent landmark in Aachen, Germany. Completed around 1320 during the reign of Emperor Ludwig IV, it is one of only two surviving gates from the city's original medieval fortifications. The name 'Ponttor' is believed to originate from the Latin word 'pons,' meaning bridge, referencing its location near a former bridge over the Annuntiaten stream. This impressive gatehouse served as both a crucial entrance to the city and a defensive fortress. Its architecture showcases medieval military design, featuring twin towers approximately 25 meters high, constructed primarily from local blue limestone and sandstone. The gate also includes machicolations, openings above the archway used to drop hot oil or rocks on invaders. Today, the Ponttor is a major tourist attraction, well-preserved over the centuries. While the interior is not generally open to the public, the exterior can be admired at any time. The gate is used by German Youth and Scout groups.
