Discover more about Bismarck Tower

The Bismarck Tower in Aachen stands as a proud tribute to Otto von Bismarck, offering visitors a glimpse into the past and rewarding them with breathtaking panoramic views. The 27-meter stone tower rises above a semicircular terrace in the Burtscheid district forest, near the Waldfriedhof cemetery. It is one of 173 still-standing towers and columns that were constructed in the German Empire to commemorate Bismarck. The tower's construction was initiated in 1907, with the idea originating from the student society at RWTH Aachen. The Aachen city council supported the construction to honor Bismarck, who served as a government clerk in Aachen before entering politics. The tower was designed by Georg Frentzen and features a base divided into five segments with two staircases. Above the portals are basalt busts of Otto von Bismarck, Helmuth Karl Bernhard von Moltke, and Albrecht von Roon, designed by Karl Krauss. Visitors can access the tower through the Aachen Forest Cemetery. The tower has always been popular as a lookout, and after renovations between 1999 and 2005, it remains accessible to the public. The surrounding park-like area invites visitors to stroll through its peaceful grounds.
