Discover more about Sint-Christoffelkathedraal

The Sint-Christoffelkathedraal, a striking Gothic cathedral, has been a central landmark in Roermond for centuries. Construction of the church began around 1410, intended as a replacement for an older parish church situated outside the city walls. Over time, the original design evolved into the five-aisled basilica with a hall choir that stands today. Throughout its history, the cathedral has endured numerous calamities. A city fire in 1554, the iconoclasm of 1566, and plundering by the troops of William of Orange in 1572 all took their toll. Lightning strikes and storms repeatedly damaged the tower. The most devastating event occurred on February 28, 1945, when German forces, in advance of the Allied liberation, detonated the tower. The cathedral was painstakingly rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1957. A major renovation was completed in 2016. The cathedral's interior boasts notable features, including a Renaissance-era sacrament altar dating back to 1593, a Baroque pulpit, and an organ built in 1957. The golden statue of Saint Christopher, affectionately known as "Sjtuf," atop the 86-meter tower is a beloved symbol of Roermond. The tower is open for climbing on the first Saturday of the month from April to October. Today, the Sint-Christoffelkathedraal stands as a testament to Roermond's resilience and a showcase of architectural and artistic heritage.
