Discover more about Vrijthof

The Vrijthof is the largest square in Maastricht's city center, steeped in a rich history that stretches back to Roman times. Originally, the area served as a Roman and Frankish cemetery before transforming into a semi-private space belonging to the Collegiate Church of Saint Servatius. In 1223, Emperor Frederik II officially recognized the area when he transferred it to the chapter of Saint Servatius. Over the centuries, Vrijthof has been a parade ground, a marketplace, and even a site for public executions. The square is framed by significant landmarks, including the Basilica of Saint Servatius, believed to be built above the grave of Saint Servatius who died in Maastricht in 384 AD, and the Sint Janskerk with its distinctive red tower. The Spanish Government building and the General's House also add to the square's architectural richness. Today, the Vrijthof is a vibrant center for events, festivals, and cultural experiences. It hosts events like the TEFAF Art Fair and the summer concerts by André Rieu. Visitors can also enjoy the numerous cafes and restaurants that line the square, offering a taste of Maastricht's hospitality.
