Discover more about Hohenfreyberg Castle

Hohenfreyberg Castle, located near Pfronten in the Ostallgäu region of Bavaria, is a fascinating example of late medieval castle construction. Built between 1418 and 1432 by Frederick of Freyberg, it was designed to evoke the style of older, high medieval castles, a conscious choice during a time when such designs were becoming obsolete. The castle's history is intertwined with the Freyberg family, who sought to create a symbol of aristocratic power. However, the costs of construction and maintenance led them to sell the castle to Archduke Sigmund of Austria in 1484. Later, it was pawned to Georg Gossembrot, a merchant from Augsburg, who significantly modernized its defenses. During the Thirty Years' War in 1646, Hohenfreyberg Castle was abandoned and set ablaze to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. Today, the ruins stand as a testament to the region's turbulent past, offering visitors a chance to explore the remains of its walls, towers, and artillery roundel. The site provides stunning views of the surrounding landscape and a glimpse into the lives of those who once inhabited this imposing fortress.
