Das fressende Haus, or "The Eating House," is a captivating museum located in Weißenstein, a district of Regen, Germany. Originally constructed around 1100 as a granary for the nearby Weißenstein Castle, the building gained its unusual name due to the exorbitant costs of its upkeep. The moniker was coined by Siegfried von Vegesack, a Baltic poet who resided there for many years.The museum's exhibits offer a multifaceted glimpse into the region's past and culture. A dedicated space commemorates Siegfried von Vegesack, showcasing his life and literary works. Visitors can also explore a collection of archaeological finds from the 14th to 17th centuries and a folk-art section that illustrates the "beautiful sides of a hard life". One of the museum's highlights is the world's largest private collection of Schnupftabaksdosen (snuffboxes), featuring 1,200 colorful and ornate containers.In 2023, the museum was redesigned and upgraded, enhancing the visitor experience. The revamp included a redesigned ticket area and museum shop, a refreshed exhibit on medieval Weißenstein, and the relocation of Siegfried von Vegesack's study to the third floor, integrating it into a comprehensive multimedia exhibition about the poet. The museum also hosts special events and workshops.Located at the foot of Weißenstein Castle, Das fressende Haus also provides a unique view of the town of Regen and the surrounding natural landscape. The Gläserner Wald (Glass Forest), a nearby art installation featuring trees made of glass, adds to the location's appeal.
