The Eagle's Nest Travel Guide

The Eagle's Nest, or Kehlsteinhaus, is a historical building located on the Kehlstein peak near Berchtesgaden. Constructed in 1937-1938, it was commissioned by the Nazi Party as a representation venue and was used for government meetings. Despite its history, Hitler only visited the Eagle's Nest around 14 times, as he was not particularly fond of the location.Today, the Eagle's Nest operates seasonally as a restaurant, beer garden, and tourist destination, offering visitors panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps. The site is generally open from mid-May to mid-October, but it is best to check the exact dates, as weather conditions can affect the opening times.To reach the Eagle's Nest, visitors must take a special bus from the Obersalzberg Documentation Center. The Kehlsteinstraße, the road leading to the Eagle's Nest, is closed to regular traffic and rises 800 meters in altitude. The bus journey takes around 20 minutes and includes a ride through five tunnels. After the bus ride, visitors enter a 124-meter tunnel through the mountain to a mirrored brass elevator that brings them to the Eagle's Nest.
