Discover more about Veste Oberhaus

Perched on the St. Georgsberg mountain, Veste Oberhaus dominates the city of Passau, offering breathtaking views of the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers. Founded in 1219 by Ulrich II, Prince-Bishop of Passau, the fortress served as a symbol of the bishopric's power and a defense against external threats. Over the centuries, Veste Oberhaus underwent numerous renovations and expansions, showcasing fortification techniques from the 13th to the 19th centuries. The fortress was attacked five times between 1250 and 1482 but was never conquered. It also served as a prison, housing Protestant Anabaptists in the 16th century, during which time they developed the Ausbund hymnal. Today, Veste Oberhaus is home to the Oberhausmuseum, which presents exhibitions on the history of Passau and the Middle Ages. Visitors can explore the castle's historic walls, marvel at the Gothic frescoes in St. George's Chapel, and enjoy panoramic views from the Observation Tower and the Linde Battery viewpoint. The fortress also houses a restaurant and a youth hostel.
