Overview
Burg Mitterfels, also known as Schloss Mitterfels, is a captivating historical site nestled in the heart of Bavaria. This impressive castle, now serving as the town hall of Mitterfels, offers a unique glimpse into the region's rich medieval heritage. Originally built in the late 11th century by the Counts of Bogen, Burg Mitterfels played a crucial role in securing their territory. Its strategic location, perched atop a narrow, 407-meter-high rocky ridge overlooking the Menach River, provided a natural defensive advantage. The name "Mitterfels" itself reflects its historical significance, meaning "middle rock," as it was the central castle between Bogen and Falkenfels. Throughout its history, Burg Mitterfels has witnessed numerous changes in ownership and purpose. In 1242, it fell into the hands of the Wittelsbachs, who transformed it into a ducal and electoral Pfleggericht (administrative district) from 1280 to 1799. Subsequently, it served as an electoral and royal Landgericht (regional court) from 1799 to 1879, followed by a Bavarian Amtsgericht (local court) from 1879 to 1973. The castle suffered destruction during the Thirty Years' War in 1623 at the hands of Swedish troops but was later reclaimed in 1742 during the War of the Austrian Succession. In 1812, after the demolition of the fortifications, an office building was erected on the castle grounds. Today, Burg Mitterfels stands as a remarkable blend of historical architecture and modern functionality. While the outer fortifications are no longer present, the castle retains significant remnants of its medieval past. Visitors can explore the imposing defensive walls, the remnants of the Zwinger (outer defensive enclosure) with its historic wall towers and embrasures, and the deep moat that once protected the castle from invaders. A stone bridge, built in 1791, spans the moat, providing access to the castle grounds. Within the castle walls, the former Pflegerhaus (administrator's house) now serves as the town hall of Mitterfels, housing the administrative offices of the municipality since 1973. The Heimatmuseum (local history museum), located in the former prison wing in the northwestern Zwinger, offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's cultural heritage. The museum showcases a diverse collection of artifacts, including traditional costumes, tools, and implements, providing insights into the daily lives of the people who once inhabited this area. Visitors can also explore the remains of the main tower, which collapsed in 1812, and wander through the castle gardens, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The nearby St. Georg church, originally a castle chapel dating back to 1224, is another notable landmark. Throughout the year, Burg Mitterfels hosts a variety of cultural events, including concerts, markets, and open-air theater performances. These events add to the castle's vibrant atmosphere and provide opportunities for visitors to experience the local culture. The Burgmuseum (castle museum) is open from April 6 to the end of October, every Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and public holiday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Guided tours are available upon request. Admission is €2 for adults, €1.50 for groups (8 or more), €1 for children up to 18 years old, and free for children under 12. School tours are €20, and adult tours are €30 plus admission. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a culture seeker, or simply looking for a scenic destination, Burg Mitterfels offers a memorable experience. Its rich history, stunning architecture, and panoramic views make it a must-see attraction in the Bavarian Forest.
