Discover more about Drömling

The Drömling Biosphere Reserve, a 340 sq km (130 sq mi) depression, straddles the border between Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Once an impenetrable swamp and alder forest, it was systematically cultivated in the 18th century under Frederick the Great, transforming it into a cultural landscape of large-scale wetland and fenland. The area is known as the 'land of a thousand ditches' due to its extensive network of streams, totaling almost 2,000 km in length. This unique landscape provides valuable habitats for various species, including the white stork, with over 40 breeding pairs. The Drömling also serves as a crucial stopover for migrating birds like cranes, geese, swans, ducks and the Eurasian curlew. Since 2019, the Drömling has been a designated biosphere reserve and, since 2023, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognized for its diverse landscape and successful reintroduction of endangered species such as the Eurasian otter, beaver and white-tailed eagle. Visitors can explore the area through various activities, including hiking and guided nature tours. Observation huts provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching, allowing visitors to witness the Drömling's rich birdlife up close.
