Discover more about Kalimandscharo

Rising from the plains near Colbitz, the Kalimandscharo, also known as Halde 2 of the Zielitz potash mine, is a striking man-made mountain offering unexpected vistas in the Magdeburger Börde region. This 120-meter-high heap, created from the byproducts of potash mining, is the highest elevation between Magdeburg and the Baltic Sea. For nearly 50 years, the Zielitz potash mine has been extracting raw potash salt, used in fertilizers, industrial applications, and food-grade salts. The Kalimandscharo is a result of this industrial activity. Guided tours, led by members of the Bergmannsverein Zielitz e.V. (Zielitz Miners Association), provide insights into the mining operations and the landscape. The ascent, a 6 km hike with slopes up to 16%, rewards visitors with views of the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide, Europe's largest canal crossing, and, on clear days, the Brocken mountain in the Harz. The tours operate from the beginning of May to the end of October, every Saturday at 3 PM. During weekdays, including Saturdays (except at 3 PM), and outside the season, tours are available only for groups of 10 or more. The site also features a nesting site for a peregrine falcon pair, with a camera providing live views. The Kalimandscharo also hosts the Kalimandscharo Festival, held by the Holzhaustheater Zielitz.
