    Discover more about Burg Arnstein

Burg Arnstein, situated on the edge of the Harz mountains near Harkerode, Germany, is a striking ruin with a rich history dating back to the 12th century. The castle was the ancestral seat of the Arnstein family, who took their name from it. The first documented mention of the castle is from 1156, when Walther II named himself after the castle. The original Romanesque design included two eastern round towers and a connecting ring wall. Over the centuries, Burg Arnstein changed hands among various noble families, including the Falkensteins, Regensteins and Mansfelds. The castle saw significant reconstruction around 1530 after suffering damage in the Peasants' War. Graf Hoyer IV oversaw the rebuilding, and in 1563, Graf Johann Albrecht further expanded it, giving it a palatial character. However, by the 17th century, the castle began to fall into disrepair. In 1812, the Knigge family acquired Burg Arnstein and began restoration efforts. Since 1992, a local heritage association has been dedicated to preserving the ruins. Today, visitors can explore the partially restored main building, ascend a spiral staircase in the tower, and enjoy views of Harkerode and the Einetal valley. The castle's cellars are also accessible. Burg Arnstein also serves as a film location for fairy tales and adventure movies. The castle is constructed on diabase rock, a volcanic stone known for its durability. This solid foundation has allowed the castle to withstand the ravages of time, making it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
