The Gartenreich Dessau-Wörlitz, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000, is an exceptional example of Enlightenment-era landscape design. Duke Leopold III Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau, influenced by his travels to England and Italy, initiated the transformation of his principality into a vast English-style garden in the late 18th century. Rejecting the formal Baroque style, he sought to create a landscape that harmonized art, education, and economic development.
The Gartenreich encompasses an area of 142 square kilometers along the Elbe River and includes several distinct parks and palaces. Among the most notable are Wörlitz Park, featuring Wörlitz Palace (the first Neoclassical building in Germany) and the Gotische Haus; Oranienbaum Palace and Gardens; Mosigkau Palace, Luisium Palace; Georgium Palace, home to the Anhalt Art Gallery; and Großkühnau Palace. These parks are interconnected by a network of avenues, dikes, and scenic vistas, creating a unified landscape.
The Wörlitz Park, the heart of the Gartenreich, is renowned for its picturesque lakes, canals, bridges, and temples. Visitors can explore the park on foot, by bicycle, or by taking a traditional gondola ride. The artificial volcano on Stein Island is a unique attraction, erupting in a spectacle of fire and water. The Gartenreich also reflects Prince Franz's commitment to religious tolerance, exemplified by the Wörlitz Synagogue, built in the late 18th century near a neo-Gothic church. Today, the Gartenreich Dessau-Wörlitz welcomes over one million visitors annually, offering a blend of natural beauty, architectural grandeur, and historical significance.

Public Transport
From Dessau Hauptbahnhof (main station), take bus line 304 towards Wörlitz, Neue Reihe. The bus ride takes approximately 32 minutes and departs every 2 hours. Alternatively, take the regional train from Dessau Hbf to Wörlitz, Neue Reihe. A single fare for the bus or train is approximately €3-€4. From the Wörlitz, Neue Reihe bus stop, it's a short walk to the Wörlitz Park entrance.
Car
From the A9 motorway, take exit 10 towards Dessau-Ost/Oranienbaum. Follow the B107 towards Oranienbaum/Wörlitzer Anlage. Parking is available at the Großparkplatz Wörlitzer Park Seespitze, located at Seespitze 25, 06785 Oranienbaum-Wörlitz. A day ticket costs €5. From the parking lot, it is a 10-minute walk to the Gotische Haus, a 10-minute walk to the gondola station and a 15-minute walk to Schloss Wörlitz.
