Discover more about Hubbrücke Magdeburg

The Hubbrücke Magdeburg is a prominent landmark in Magdeburg, embodying the city's industrial history and architectural ingenuity. Constructed in 1848 for the Potsdam-Magdeburg railway line, the bridge initially featured nine openings. To accommodate the evolving needs of Elbe River shipping, it underwent several transformations, culminating in its current form in 1933. No longer used as a railway bridge since 1998, the Hubbrücke was briefly locked in a raised position in June 2001. It served as a pedestrian bridge from 2002 to 2005 until the Sternbrücke was rebuilt. Following a large-scale fundraising campaign, the bridge was renovated in 2013 and reopened to pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge's lifting mechanism, capable of raising the 90-meter, 450-ton central section up to 5.05 meters above the Elbe, was originally powered by a hydraulic system fed by a water tower located west of the bridge. Later, this was replaced by an electrically driven spindle system with concrete counterweights, though manual operation remained possible. An art installation by Maurizio Nannucci, featuring red and blue neon lettering, adds a contemporary touch to the structure. On the upstream side, it reads "Von so weit her bis hierhin" (From so far to here), and on the downstream side, "Von hier aus noch viel weiter" (From here still much further). Today, the Hubbrücke is a popular spot for photographers and sightseers, framing iconic structures like the Magdeburg Cathedral and the Our Lady Monastery with its industrial charm. A unique swing, installed by local youths in 2015 on the eastern side, offers a special perspective of the city and a relaxing photo opportunity.
