    Discover more about Magdeburg Cathedral

Magdeburg Cathedral, or Magdeburger Dom, is a testament to architectural ambition and historical importance. Officially named the Cathedral of Saints Catherine and Maurice, it holds the distinction of being the first Gothic cathedral constructed in Germany. Its towering spires have dominated the Magdeburg skyline for centuries, serving as a powerful symbol of the city. The cathedral's story began in 937 when Emperor Otto I founded a monastery dedicated to St. Maurice. This original structure was replaced by a new cathedral in 1004, which itself was destroyed by fire in 1207. The ambitious Archbishop Albert II von Kefernburg then initiated the construction of the current Gothic cathedral in 1209, drawing inspiration from French Gothic architecture. The construction spanned approximately 300 years, with the steeples completed in 1520. Inside, the cathedral impresses with its soaring nave, intricate stonework, and numerous works of art. Highlights include the tomb of Emperor Otto I, the late-antique porphyry baptismal font, and sculptures such as the Royal Couple and the Wise and Foolish Virgins. The cathedral's towers reach impressive heights of 99.25 meters and 100.98 meters, offering panoramic views of Magdeburg. Throughout its history, Magdeburg Cathedral has witnessed periods of glory and devastation. It endured looting, served as a storage facility during the Napoleonic era, and suffered damage during World War II. However, it has always been restored, standing as a symbol of resilience and faith. Today, the Magdeburg Cathedral is a principal church of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany.
