Discover more about Tangermünde Castle

Tangermünde Castle, also known as Schloss Tangermünde, boasts a rich history dating back to the 10th century. Established around 925 by the Ascanian margraves, it initially served as a border fortress at the confluence of the Tanger and Elbe rivers. The castle gained importance as an imperial stronghold in the 10th and 11th centuries, safeguarding the German Empire's frontier. In 1373, Emperor Charles IV recognized the castle's strategic value and expanded it into a grand residence, intending to make Tangermünde the capital of Brandenburg. Although this vision was not realized by his successors, the castle remained an important administrative center. Over the centuries, Tangermünde Castle faced numerous challenges, including destruction by Swedish troops in 1640 during the Thirty Years' War. However, it was rebuilt and repurposed, serving as an administrative building, a district court, and even a children's hospital. Today, Tangermünde Castle is a unique blend of historical architecture and modern amenities. The castle complex features preserved elements such as the castle gate, chancery, a round keep, a residential tower, and the moat. The former Amtshaus has been transformed into a hotel, Schlosshotel Tangermünde, offering guests a chance to stay within the castle walls. Visitors can explore the castle museum to delve into its past, admire the architecture, and enjoy panoramic views of the Elbe River and surrounding landscape. The castle also hosts seasonal exhibitions and cultural events, adding to its appeal as a tourist destination.
