Neues Schloss: Baden-Baden's Royal Residence with a View

The Neues Schloss, or New Castle, stands as a proud testament to Baden-Baden's rich history and architectural grandeur. Situated on the Florentinerberg, the castle offers breathtaking views and a tangible connection to Baden-Baden's royal past. Originally built in the 14th and 15th centuries, it served as the residence of the Margraves of Baden. Over the centuries, the castle underwent several expansions and renovations, reflecting the changing tastes and needs of its residents. The architecture showcases a blend of styles, with Renaissance elements prominent in the main buildings. These include the three-story main castle, the carriage house, the kitchen building, and the archive tower. The Cavalier House, accessible through the western gatehouse, adds another layer to the castle's architectural tapestry. In 1689, during the Nine Years' War, the castle was largely destroyed by French troops. Margrave Louis William subsequently moved the seat of government to Rastatt. However, the Neues Schloss was rebuilt in the early 18th century, incorporating the remaining outer walls. In the 19th century, it served as a summer residence for the Grand Dukes of Baden, who further restored and renovated the palace in a new Renaissance style. Today, the Neues Schloss is owned by Kuwaiti investors who are in the process of converting it into a luxury hotel. While the interior is currently closed to the public, the exterior of the castle remains a sight to behold. Visitors can wander through the palace garden and admire the Baroque architecture. The 130-meter-long terrace, laid out in 1670, offers stunning views of Baden-Baden and the surrounding countryside.
