Discover more about Babelsberg Palace

Babelsberg Palace, majestically situated on the banks of the Havel River, stands as a testament to Prussian royal history and architectural grandeur. Built in the English neo-Gothic style, the palace served as the summer residence for Prince William of Prussia, who later became Emperor William I, and his wife Augusta of the House of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach for over 50 years. The palace is located in Park Babelsberg, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The palace's origins trace back to 1833 when Prince William commissioned Karl Friedrich Schinkel to design a modest cottage. As William's status grew, architects Ludwig Persius and Johann Heinrich Strack expanded the palace between 1844 and 1849, resulting in the impressive structure seen today. Princess Augusta actively participated in the design, leaving her personal touch on the palace. The palace has 99 rooms, characterized by lancet windows, pointed arches, polygonal turrets, and bay windows in the English Gothic style. Babelsberg Park, designed by Peter Joseph Lenné and later enhanced by Prince Pückler, surrounds the palace with its romantic landscape. The park features terraced gardens, water features, and wooded areas, offering scenic views of the Havel River, Glienicke Bridge, and the surrounding countryside. Other structures within the park include the Flatow Tower, the Small Palace, and the Steam Engine Building. While Babelsberg Palace is currently undergoing renovations and is only open for special events, the park remains open to the public. Visitors can explore the grounds, admire the architecture from the outside, and enjoy the panoramic views.
