Discover more about Jan Bouman Haus

The Jan Bouman Haus is a museum located in the heart of Potsdam's Dutch Quarter, at Mittelstraße 8. The house itself, built around 1735, is a prime example of the Dutch-style architecture that defines the neighborhood. The Dutch Quarter was constructed between 1732 and 1742 under the direction of Jan Bouman, a Dutch carpenter, shipbuilder, and master builder, to entice Dutch artisans to settle in Potsdam under the reign of King Friedrich Wilhelm I. The museum's exhibits detail the history of the Dutch Quarter and the restoration of the building. Visitors can explore the architecture and learn about the daily lives of the Dutch who once lived and worked in these houses. The house features a red brick facade with white accents, typical of Dutch building traditions. After 1945, war damage impaired the building's usability, and it fell into disrepair after the last owner died in 1979. In 1990, the Förderverein zur Pflege niederländischer Kultur in Potsdam e. V. (Association for the Promotion of Dutch Culture in Potsdam) was founded and dedicated itself to the reconstruction. With the help of sponsors, including the Wüstenrot Foundation, the building was extensively restored between 1995 and 1997. The Jan Bouman Haus opened as a museum on April 18, 1997. Today, the Jan Bouman Haus stands as a testament to Potsdam's unique cultural heritage and the enduring influence of Dutch architecture and craftsmanship.
