Discover more about Humboldt Box

The Humboldt Box, once located on Schloßplatz in central Berlin, was a unique architectural statement. Erected as a temporary exhibition space, it provided a window into the ongoing construction of the Humboldt Forum, a modern cultural center built on the site of the former Berlin City Palace. The Humboldt Box offered visitors a multi-faceted experience. Interactive displays chronicled the history of the Berlin Palace, its destruction during World War II, and the subsequent construction of the Palast der Republik by the East German government. The displays also detailed the ambitious plans for the Humboldt Forum, showcasing its design and the diverse collections it would house. A particularly popular exhibit was a large-scale model of Berlin around 1900, illustrating how the historic palace fit into the city. The five-story structure also featured a rooftop terrace and restaurant, offering panoramic views of the construction site and the surrounding cityscape. The Humboldt Box was designed to be a temporary structure with an anticipated lifespan of approximately eight years. It was dismantled in February 2019, following the completion of the Humboldt Forum.
