    Discover more about Schlossbrücke

The Schlossbrücke, or Palace Bridge, is a historic and architecturally significant bridge in the heart of Berlin. Located in the central Mitte district, it elegantly spans the Spree River, linking the Unter den Linden boulevard to the renowned Museum Island. This bridge is not merely a crossing but a testament to Berlin's rich history and artistic heritage. Originally built between 1821 and 1824, the Schlossbrücke was designed by the celebrated Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Schinkel, known for his neoclassical style, envisioned the bridge as part of a larger urban renewal project to enhance the area between the Spree River and Bebelplatz. The bridge replaced a former wooden structure known as the Hundebrücke (Bridge of Dogs), which dated back to the 15th century and was used by the Hohenzollern rulers for hunting expeditions. The new sandstone arch bridge provided a direct route from Unter den Linden to the Brandenburg Gate. The Schlossbrücke is adorned with eight remarkable Carrara marble sculptures, added between 1845 and 1857. These sculptures, designed according to Schinkel's plans, depict the stages of a warrior's life, from youth to death and ascension to Olympus. The sculptures were created by eight different sculptors. Severely damaged during World War II, the bridge underwent several transformations in the post-war era. In 1951, under East German control, it was renamed Marx-Engels-Brücke. Fortunately, the sculptures had been removed and stored during the war, and were later returned in 1981. The bridge's original name was restored on October 3, 1991, marking the first anniversary of German reunification. Today, the Schlossbrücke stands as a symbol of Berlin's unity and progress, offering stunning views of the Berlin Cathedral, Museum Island, and the modern government district.
