Discover more about Lustgarten

The Lustgarten, meaning "Pleasure Garden" in German, is a park located on Museum Island in central Berlin. Its history dates back to the 16th century when it served as a kitchen garden for the Berlin Palace. Over the centuries, the Lustgarten has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting Berlin's tumultuous past. In the 17th century, the garden was converted into a formal Dutch-style garden with fountains and sculptures. However, in the 18th century, King Friedrich Wilhelm I transformed it into a military parade ground. The park was replanted with lawns in 1790, and in the 19th century, Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Peter Joseph Lenné enhanced the garden to complement the Altes Museum. The Nazis paved the Lustgarten in 1934 for mass rallies. After World War II, the area was a wasteland, and it wasn't until German reunification that the park was restored to its former glory. Today, the Lustgarten is a popular green space with lawns, trees, and a central fountain. One of its main attractions is the large granite bowl, nicknamed the "Berlin soup bowl". The Lustgarten provides a space for relaxation and recreation in the heart of Berlin, surrounded by iconic landmarks such as the Berlin Cathedral, the Altes Museum, and the Humboldt Forum.
