Located in Volkspark Friedrichshain, the Märchenbrunnen, or Fairy Tale Fountain, is a captivating landmark that enchants visitors with its elaborate neo-Baroque architecture and sculptures. The fountain was commissioned in 1893 and opened in 1913 as a public space for entertainment. Designed by Ludwig Hoffmann, the fountain depicts scenes and characters from Grimms' Fairy Tales.
The centerpiece of the fountain is a large basin with four cascading waterfalls, one large fountain, nine smaller fountains, and seven frog figurines. Surrounding the fountain are sculptures of characters like Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, and Snow White. The sculptures were created by Ignatius Taschner, Georg Wrba, and Josef Rauch. On the east side of the fountain, a semicircular arcade features a stone bowl decorated with dog head sculptures.
Severely damaged during World War II, the fountain was restored in the 1950s and again in 2005. Today, the Märchenbrunnen is a popular destination for families and tourists. Visitors can relax by the fountain, explore the surrounding Volkspark Friedrichshain, and enjoy the magical atmosphere.
