Discover more about Veterinary Anatomy Theater

The Tieranatomisches Theater, located on the North Campus of Humboldt University, is a unique historical site in Berlin. Built in 1789-90 by Carl Gotthard Langhans, the architect behind the Brandenburg Gate, it served as the centerpiece of the newly founded veterinary school. King Friedrich Wilhelm II commissioned the building to address animal diseases and train veterinarians for the Prussian cavalry. The building's architecture blends early classicism with elements of ancient round temples and amphitheaters. The domed lecture hall, adorned with murals of livestock and rural scenes, provided a stage for the study of animal anatomy. A lift in the center allowed for the dramatic presentation of anatomical lectures. For over 200 years, the Tieranatomisches Theater played a vital role in veterinary education and research. In 2012, after extensive renovations, it reopened as a public venue for exhibitions and events. Today, the Hermann von Helmholtz Center for Cultural Technology uses the building to host exhibitions that combine scientific research with artistic presentations. The permanent exhibition, "Das Tieranatomische Theater – Architecture and Science History," explores the building's rich history. Visitors can explore the historic auditorium, view animal skeletons and scientific instruments, and learn about the evolution of veterinary medicine. The theater also hosts lectures, concerts, and other events, making it a vibrant center for cultural and intellectual exchange.
