Discover more about Mausoleum in the Palace Garden Charlottenburg

Nestled within the sprawling Charlottenburg Palace Garden, the Mausoleum stands as a poignant monument to Prussian royalty. Originally commissioned by King Friedrich Wilhelm III as a tribute to his beloved wife, Queen Luise, who died in 1810, the Mausoleum has evolved into a memorial for several key figures of the Hohenzollern dynasty. Designed in the neoclassical style by Heinrich Gentz, with input from Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the Mausoleum initially was a simple, temple-like structure. In 1810, Queen Louise's coffin was moved here from Berlin Cathedral. The centerpiece is the marble sarcophagus of Queen Luise, sculpted by Christian Daniel Rauch, depicting the queen in peaceful repose. The delicate details and serene expression capture her renowned beauty and grace. Over time, the Mausoleum was expanded to accommodate the remains of other royals. King Friedrich Wilhelm III was laid to rest beside his wife in 1840. Later, Kaiser Wilhelm I and his wife Augusta were also entombed within, solidifying its status as a central memorial for the Hohenzollern dynasty. The sarcophagi of the rulers are located in the crypt beneath the hall. Today, visitors can stroll through the Charlottenburg Palace Garden, admiring the blend of Baroque and English garden styles. The Mausoleum offers a tranquil escape from the city, surrounded by lush greenery and serene ponds.
