Discover more about Lustgarten

The Lustgarten, meaning 'pleasure garden,' is a park located on Museum Island in the heart of Berlin. Its history is as rich and varied as the city itself. Originally, in the 16th century, this space served as a kitchen garden for the Berlin Palace, providing fresh produce for the Electors of Brandenburg. In 1646, it was transformed into a formal garden with fountains and geometric paths. Over the centuries, the garden underwent several transformations, reflecting the changing priorities of the city's rulers. Friedrich Wilhelm I converted the area into a military parade ground in the 18th century. Later, it was replanted with green lawns. The Nazis further altered the Lustgarten, paving it over for mass rallies and political demonstrations in the 1930s. After World War II, the area was a wasteland until it was restored following Germany's reunification in the late 1990s. In 1999, grass was planted again. Today, the Lustgarten offers a peaceful retreat for locals and tourists alike. Visitors can relax on the lawns, enjoy the fountain, and admire the surrounding architecture. One of the park's main attractions is the granite bowl, a relic from the 19th century that weighs 70 tonnes and was transported to Berlin via the River Spree. Known by locals as the 'Berlin soup bowl', it is considered a wonder of the Biedermeier era. The Lustgarten is the perfect place to take a break while visiting Museum Island and the Berlin Cathedral.
