Step into a world of fantasy at the Märchenbrunnen, a captivating landmark in Berlin's Volkspark Friedrichshain. This enchanting fountain, completed in 1913, serves as an artistic entrance to the park, immersing visitors in the timeless tales of the Brothers Grimm. Designed by city architect Ludwig Hoffmann, the Märchenbrunnen showcases a blend of neo-Baroque and early Italian water theatre styles. The centerpiece is a grand fountain basin with four cascading waterfalls, creating a mesmerizing display of water and sound. The basin features one large and nine smaller individual fountains, along with seven water-spouting frog figurines, including one representing the Frog Prince. The edge of the fountain is adorned with sculptures of characters from Grimm's fairy tales, including Hansel and Gretel, Puss in Boots, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Sleeping Beauty. On the east side, a semicircular arcade encloses the cascading pool, featuring arches decorated with stone bowls and dog head sculptures. Above the arcade, a gallery showcases sculptures of animals from folklore and fairy tales. Behind the arcade lies the Dolphin Fountain, with sculptures of children playing with fairy-tale animals. The Märchenbrunnen suffered damage during World War II, but was restored. A comprehensive restoration project was completed in 2007, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
