History of Altstadt-Süd

Roman Foundations and Southern Expansion

The southern part of Cologne’s old city developed on ground occupied by Roman Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, whose urban grid and defensive structures shaped later building patterns. St Maria im Kapitol stands on the site traditionally associated with a Roman Capitolium, although the present church is medieval rather than Roman. As Cologne expanded and its medieval fortifications evolved, the southern approach became a zone of churches, houses, workshops and routes linking the city to the Rhine and to settlements beyond the walls.

The Medieval Southern Gateway

Severinstraße grew as an important north–south route through the southern old city, and Severinstorburg became its monumental entrance in the medieval fortification system. The gate, generally dated to the late thirteenth century, controlled movement through the southern wall and helped give the surrounding quarter its enduring identity. Religious institutions, including St Maria im Kapitol and later Kartäuserkirche, formed important landmarks within this dense urban fabric, while markets, crafts and river-related commerce sustained everyday life around the old town.

Harbour Commerce and Religious Precincts

From the early modern period into the nineteenth century, Altstadt-Süd remained a mixed urban district of parish life, trade, workshops and tightly packed housing. The Rhine edge and harbour installations connected the area with Cologne’s wider commercial economy, while monasteries and churches preserved substantial institutional precincts. Industrialisation and modern transport altered the scale of movement through the quarter, but the historic street network and surviving gates continued to distinguish the southern old city from newer districts beyond the medieval core.

War, Reconstruction and Rheinauhafen

Second World War destruction severely damaged Cologne’s historic centre, and Altstadt-Süd was rebuilt through a combination of restored monuments, reconstructed churches and modern housing. Later changes reshaped the riverfront: the former harbour area of Rheinauhafen was redeveloped in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries with offices, apartments, cultural attractions and the distinctive crane houses. The 2009 collapse of the Historical Archive at Waidmarkt, caused during underground construction, caused deaths and the loss or damage of important records, leaving a lasting mark on the neighbourhood’s recent history.
