The Fränkische Galerie, a branch of the Bavarian National Museum, resides within the formidable Festung Rosenberg, high above the charming town of Kronach. This gallery offers a captivating journey through the artistic landscape of Franconia, showcasing over 220 masterpieces of painting and sculpture from the late Gothic and Renaissance periods. The collection provides a unique glimpse into the cultural and artistic milieu that shaped the region during this transformative era. The gallery's location within Festung Rosenberg adds another layer of historical significance to the experience. The fortress itself is a marvel, one of Germany's largest and most well-preserved fortifications, never having been conquered. Its imposing presence serves as a powerful reminder of the region's strategic importance throughout history. The Fränkische Galerie occupies the Kommandantenbau, a structure that owes its present appearance to the renowned Baroque architect Balthasar Neumann, who remodeled it between 1730 and 1733. The building's interior has been thoughtfully adapted to serve as a museum, with 13 rooms spread across three floors, providing approximately 1,000 square meters of exhibition space. The Fränkische Galerie's collection is primarily drawn from the holdings of the Bavarian National Museum, with a significant portion originating from the private art collection of Martin Joseph von Reider, a drawing teacher from Bamberg, acquired in 1860. The National Museum further enriched its collection through purchases at auctions of old church property in Weißenburg in Bayern during the 1850s, as well as through donations from private collections in Würzburg, Bad Kissingen and Eichstätt. These works are complemented by long-term loans from the Bavarian State Painting Collections, the Federal Republic of Germany, the City of Kronach, and the Verein 1000 Jahre Kronach e.V. The gallery's exhibits primarily focus on art from the 13th to 16th centuries, representing various parts of Franconia. Among the highlights are two panels by Hans von Kulmbach, a student of Albrecht Dürer, showcasing the influence of the master on his protégé. However, the gallery is particularly renowned for its collection of works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Kronach's most celebrated native son. The collection includes Cranach's first Protestant doctrinal painting, offering a glimpse into the artist's evolving religious beliefs and his role in the Reformation. The gallery also features other outstanding examples of Cranach's oeuvre, providing a comprehensive overview of his artistic development. Visitors can admire a diverse range of artworks, including panel paintings, sculptures, and carved altarpieces, each meticulously illuminated to enhance its beauty and detail. The gallery's collection also includes works by Tilman Riemenschneider, one of the most important sculptors of the late Gothic period.
