Town Hall
Explore the Historic Town Hall of Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Experience the heart of medieval Rothenburg at the Marktplatz, a historic square surrounded by stunning architecture, vibrant markets, and festive events throughout the year.
The Marktplatz, or Market Square, is the vibrant heart of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of Germany's best-preserved medieval towns. This historic square has been the center of town life for centuries, hosting markets, festivals, and important events. Surrounded by iconic landmarks like the Rathaus (Town Hall) with its distinctive Gothic and Renaissance architecture, and the St. George's Fountain, the Marktplatz offers a captivating glimpse into Rothenburg's rich history. The square is framed by beautifully preserved half-timbered houses and patrician mansions, creating a picturesque scene that draws visitors from around the world. Whether you're enjoying a traditional *Schneeball* pastry, witnessing the hourly *Meistertrunk* reenactment, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, the Marktplatz is an essential stop. During Advent, the square transforms into the enchanting Reiterlesmarkt Christmas market, adding to its allure. The Marktplatz is easily accessible on foot from anywhere within Rothenburg's old town, making it a must-see destination for any visitor.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Walking
From most points within Rothenburg's old town, the Marktplatz is easily accessible on foot. Orientation is straightforward due to the town's compact size and the Rathaus's prominent tower. From the Plönlein, walk along Untere Schmiedgasse, passing the old town moat, directly to the Marktplatz. From the Rothenburg ob der Tauber train station, exit the station and walk straight ahead, following the main road (Bahnhofstraße) towards the old town walls. Enter the old town through the Rödertor gate, then continue straight ahead on Rödergasse, which leads directly to the Marktplatz. The walk from the train station takes approximately 10 minutes. No costs are associated with walking.
Public Transport
While the Marktplatz is easily walkable from most areas, local bus lines operate within Rothenburg. The closest bus stops to the Marktplatz are 'Marktplatz' and 'Rathaus'. Check local schedules for the most up-to-date routes and times. A single bus fare within Rothenburg typically costs around €2-3. However, given the short distances within the old town, walking is generally the preferred and most convenient option.
Taxi/Ride-Share
Taxis and ride-sharing services are available in Rothenburg, but their use for reaching the Marktplatz from within the old town is generally unnecessary due to the short distances and pedestrian-friendly nature of the area. A taxi ride from the Rothenburg ob der Tauber train station to the Marktplatz would cost approximately €8-12, but walking is a more practical and enjoyable option. Keep in mind that traffic within the old town can be limited, and some areas are pedestrian-only.
Driving
Driving directly to the Marktplatz is not recommended due to limited parking and traffic restrictions within the old town. It's best to park in one of the designated parking lots outside the city walls (P1, P2, P3, P4, or P5) and walk to the Marktplatz. Parking fees in these lots typically range from €6-10 per day. P4 (at Galgentor) is closest to the city wall. From there, it's a short walk through an archway in the city wall to the Marktplatz. Be aware of the night driving ban in the core area of the old town from 7 PM to 6 AM.
