Wolfsberg Castle: A Ruined Jewel of Franconian Switzerland

By 1383, Wolfsberg Castle was listed among the holdings of the Bishopric of Bamberg, though the exact circumstances of this transfer remain unclear. It subsequently became the seat of an episcopal administrative office and was repeatedly enfeoffed (granted as a fief) from the 15th to the 17th centuries. The castle faced destruction multiple times throughout its history. It was first destroyed in 1388 during the South German War of the Cities but was rebuilt in 1408 under Amtmann (official) Albert of Egloffstein. During the Peasants' War of 1525, the castle was once again ravaged, only to be rebuilt in 1547 under Philip of Egloffstein. The last enfeoffee of the castle was William of Wiesenthau in 1568. Under his stewardship, the castle fell into disrepair, and by the time it reverted to the Bishopric in 1609, it was uninhabited and dilapidated. The Thirty Years' War brought further devastation, with Swedish forces causing damage in 1631 and 1632, followed by Tilly's cavalry and Electoral Bavarian troops in 1633. In 1803, the Bavarian state seized the castle, leaving it vacant. In 1823, it was sold for a mere 50 guilders to a stonemason from Brunn, who then gifted it to his son-in-law. The son-in-law proceeded to dismantle the castle, selling off its stones piecemeal. Today, the ruins of Wolfsberg Castle stand as a testament to its turbulent past. The upper bailey is permanently open to the public, serving as a viewing platform with stunning views of the Trubach Valley and the surrounding Franconian Switzerland-Veldenstein Forest Nature Park.
