Overview
Michaelstein Abbey, or Kloster Michaelstein, is a former Cistercian monastery that has transformed into a vibrant center for music, history, and horticulture. Located near Blankenburg in the Harz region of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, the abbey offers a unique blend of cultural experiences that appeal to a wide range of interests. Founded in 1146 by Cistercian monks, Michaelstein Abbey initially faced a challenging existence. However, through donations, a commitment to poverty, and a life dedicated to work and strict self-management, the abbey gradually prospered. This economic success allowed the monastery to expand its influence and contribute to the surrounding region. In 1543, a significant turning point occurred when the last Catholic abbot resigned, and the Counts of Blankenburg took control of the monastery. They established a monastery school, which continued to operate even after the Dukes of Braunschweig assumed ownership. This marked the beginning of the abbey's transition from a purely religious institution to a center of education and learning. During the early 18th century, Duke Ludwig Rudolf initiated extensive construction projects and established a seminary for preachers. However, well into the 20th century, the former abbey primarily served economic functions, with the monastery property retained under various legal entities even after land reforms. In recent decades, Michaelstein Abbey has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving into a hub of cultural diversity centered around nature, monastery history, and music. Today, the abbey is home to the Saxony-Anhalt Music Academy for Education and Performance, which has earned a prominent place in the European professional music scene. The academy offers courses, advanced training, and conferences, making it a popular venue for rehearsals and musical events. The abbey's architectural features reflect its long and varied history. The medieval cloister buildings, including the monastery gardens and the music exhibition, are open to the public as a museum. Visitors can explore the well-preserved cloister, refectory, and chapter house, experiencing the sublime simplicity of Cistercian architecture. The early Gothic cloister, with its ribbed vault, serves as the central focus of the enclosure, both spiritually and communicatively. Romanesque remains, along with plant elements on the consoles and keystones, have also been preserved. The monastery gardens, meticulously recreated based on medieval plans and records, offer a tranquil escape. Visitors can wander through the herb garden, which features around 260 types of plants, including medicinal herbs used in the Middle Ages. The vegetable garden showcases around 100 plant varieties, providing a glimpse into the diets of medieval monks. An apple path, established in 2010, displays renowned apple varieties surrounded by a wildflower meadow. The inner courtyard of the abbey features a grass surface, rambler roses, a herb plantation, and a wayside cross, adding to the garden's charm. The music exhibition, "KlangZeitRaum – On the trail of the secret of music," is housed in the Baroque west wing of the cloister building. This fascinating exhibition traces the evolution of music over the centuries, showcasing instruments from the last four centuries from across Europe. An impressive sound and light installation of baroque church music, a musical salon with talks and music from famous guests, models, and experimental stations for sound production, and listening sessions with anecdotes and caricatures bring the music to life. One of the highlights of the music exhibition is the Salomon de Caus music machine, a unique reconstruction of a 17th-century water organ designed for the Heidelberg castle garden. The original machine was never built due to the Thirty Years' War, but this faithful reproduction allows visitors to experience the sounds and spectacle of this innovative musical device. Michaelstein Abbey hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including concerts, guided tours, and workshops for all ages. The abbey is also a popular destination along the Romanesque Road, a scenic route that connects numerous historical sites in Saxony-Anhalt. The R1 European Cycle Route also passes by the abbey, making it an ideal stop for cyclists exploring the region. Whether you are interested in history, music, or horticulture, Michaelstein Abbey offers a diverse and enriching experience. Its well-preserved architecture, meticulously recreated gardens, and vibrant musical atmosphere make it a must-see destination in the Harz region.
