Scheffelterrasse: Heidelberg's Panoramic Paradise
Discover Heidelberg's iconic Karlstor, a neoclassical triumphal arch marking the entrance to the historic Old Town and a gateway to the city's rich cultural heritage.
Karlstor, a triumphal arch at the eastern end of Heidelberg's Hauptstraße, stands as a monument to Prince Elector Karl Theodor. Completed in 1781, this neoclassical structure, designed by Nicolas de Pigage, blends elements from various designs, resulting in a unique gate crowned with Palatine lions. Facing the city, portraits of the Elector and his wife are visible, while the outer side displays a dedication inscription and a trophy of arms. Located at the edge of the Old Town, Karlstor provides access to Heidelberg's historic center, filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants. Its proximity to the S-Bahn station makes it easily accessible, and it serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the city's rich cultural heritage. Capture stunning photos of the gate, especially at dusk when it is beautifully illuminated, enhancing its allure.
