Liebesstein: Heidelberg's Stone of Love
Walk across Heidelberg's iconic Old Bridge, a historic sandstone landmark offering stunning views of the city, the Neckar River, and Heidelberg Castle, connecting the past and present.
The Old Bridge, or Karl-Theodor-Brücke, is Heidelberg's iconic sandstone bridge connecting the Old Town with the Neuenheim district across the Neckar River. Built in 1788, it stands as the ninth bridge on this site, replacing wooden predecessors frequently destroyed by floods and wars. Adorned with sculptures, including Elector Karl Theodor and the Roman goddess Minerva, the bridge offers stunning panoramic views of Heidelberg Castle and the city. The medieval bridge gate, complete with twin towers, adds to its charm, making it a must-see for any visitor. Stroll across its stones, soak in the atmosphere, and capture the perfect Heidelberg moment. The bridge is easily accessible by foot, public transport, and even car during limited hours, ensuring everyone can experience its timeless beauty.

Walking
From Universitätsplatz in the Old Town, walk north towards the Hauptstrasse (main street). Continue along the Hauptstrasse, following signs for the Alte Brücke. The bridge is located at the eastern end of the Hauptstrasse, approximately a 5-10 minute walk. The bridge gate will be visible as you approach. No costs involved.
Public Transport
From Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof (main train station), take bus line 32 in the direction of Universitätsplatz or bus line 34 towards Ziegelhausen. Get off at the 'Alte Brücke Nord' stop. Cross the bridge to reach the Old Town side. Alternatively, take tram lines that stop at Bismarckplatz, then walk approximately 10 minutes east along the Hauptstrasse to reach the bridge. A single public transport ticket costs approximately €2.60.
Taxi/Ride-Share
From Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof, a taxi or ride-share to the Old Bridge will take approximately 5-10 minutes, depending on traffic. The estimated fare is between €10-€15. Ask the driver to drop you off near the 'Brückentor' (bridge gate) for the closest access to the bridge.
Driving
Driving directly to the Old Bridge is possible during certain hours (Monday to Friday from 11:00-16:00 and Saturday from 11:00-24:00 and all day Sunday the bridge is closed for cars).
