Stadttor Heidelberg
Stadttor Heidelberg: Gateway to the Old Town
Step through time at Heidelberg's Brücke-Tor, a medieval gateway offering stunning views and a glimpse into the city's rich history, connecting past and present.
The Brücke-Tor, or Bridge Gate, stands as a proud sentinel at the southern end of Heidelberg's iconic Old Bridge (Alte Brücke). More than just a picturesque structure, it's a tangible link to the city's medieval past, having once formed part of Heidelberg's defensive city wall. Built of red Neckar sandstone, the gate features two imposing white towers that once served as prison cells. Today, it frames stunning views of the bridge, the Neckar River, and the surrounding cityscape, making it a favorite spot for photographers and history enthusiasts alike. Walking through the Brücke-Tor is like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into Heidelberg's rich and storied heritage. Its proximity to other major attractions, including the Heidelberg Castle and the bustling Hauptstrasse, makes it an unmissable landmark for any visitor exploring the city's charming Altstadt.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Walking
From Universitätsplatz, head east along Hauptstrasse (the main pedestrian street) towards the Neckar River. Continue until you reach the Kornmarkt, where you'll see the funicular station for Heidelberg Castle. From there, continue walking straight ahead; you'll see the Brücke-Tor at the end of Hauptstrasse, guarding the entrance to the Old Bridge. The walk is approximately 10-15 minutes and offers a pleasant stroll through the heart of Heidelberg's Old Town.
Public Transport
Take bus line 31 or 37 to the 'Alte Brücke' stop. From there, the Brücke-Tor is a very short walk, directly adjacent to the bus stop. A single ticket costs €3.40. Alternatively, a day ticket for Heidelberg costs €8.90 and allows unlimited travel on public transport within the city.
Taxi/Ride-Share
A taxi or ride-share from Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof (main train station) to the Brücke-Tor will take approximately 10-15 minutes, depending on traffic, and cost around €12-€18. Be sure to specify 'Alte Brücke' or 'Brücke-Tor' as your destination.
Driving
Driving directly to the Brücke-Tor is not recommended due to pedestrian zones and limited parking. The closest parking is available at the P13 car park under Karlsplatz. From there, it's a short walk to the gate. Parking fees at P13 are approximately €2.50 per hour.
