Kahle Pön: Sauerland's Heathland Jewel

Kahle Pön, located near Medebach in the Sauerland region of Germany, is a remarkable nature preserve characterized by its expansive high heath landscape. The sheep help to keep grasses and herbs short, preventing them from overshadowing the heathland plants, while the goats consume fast-growing saplings from trees and shrubs, effectively hindering reforestation and promoting heathland regeneration. The area is renowned for its diverse and abundant flora, including iconic heathland species such as broom heather, lingonberry, bilberry, club moss, and arnica. Among these are the rare great grey shrike and red-backed shrike, both of which are of conservation concern. Butterfly enthusiasts will be delighted by the presence of 68 recorded butterfly species at Kahle Pön, including typical high heathland specialists such as the mountain blueberry budmoth and the blueberry moth. These insects play vital roles in pollination and contribute to the overall health and resilience of the ecosystem. In addition, 16 beetle species, including the heath leaf beetle and the scarlet fire beetle, have been documented, showcasing the area's rich invertebrate diversity. This well-maintained hiking route offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and provides opportunities to discover old boundary stones dating back to 1769. These stones mark the historical border between the Principality of Waldeck (represented by a star on the north side) and Kur-Köln (represented by a cross on the south side), which corresponds to the present-day border between the states of Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. The U4 hiking trail also leads to the edge of the Pön plateau, offering another perspective on this unique landscape. The 'Blick-ins-Land Kahle Pön' trail is a relatively easy 7.7 km loop, taking around 2 hours and 5 minutes to complete, while the 'Naturweg Kahler Pön' is a 7 km premium trail that leads through one of the few remaining high heaths on the ridges of the Sauerland. For a longer hike, the 'Rundwanderung Usseln - Hohe Pön-Kahle Pön-Usseler Kreuz-Diemelquelle' is a 12.8 km loop that takes around 3 hours and 35 minutes. From Düdinghausen, it is a relatively short walk to the Kahle Pön area.
