Nordwall
Nordwall at Heidelberg Castle
Explore the formidable Thick Tower at Heidelberg Castle: a historic bastion transformed into an elegant space with breathtaking views, embodying centuries of Palatinate history.
The Thick Tower, or 'Dicker Turm,' stands as a formidable remnant of Heidelberg Castle's extensive fortifications. Built in 1533 by Ludwig V, its walls, reaching seven meters in thickness, once served as a crucial defensive structure. Later, Frederick V transformed the tower, adding a 16-sided room with expansive windows, creating a space for courtly dining and entertainment with breathtaking views. Though partially destroyed in subsequent wars, the Thick Tower remains a compelling testament to the castle's strategic importance and the evolving tastes of its inhabitants, offering visitors a glimpse into Heidelberg's rich history and architectural adaptations over the centuries. Its robust structure and panoramic vistas make it a must-see within the castle complex.
