Rathausbrunnen: A Fairytale Fountain
Discover the enchanting Rathausbrunnen in Leipzig's Burgplatz, a fairytale-inspired fountain blending artistry and history in the heart of the city.
The Rathausbrunnen, or Town Hall Fountain, is a beloved landmark in Leipzig, gracing the Burgplatz in front of the New Town Hall. Inaugurated in 1908, it was funded by Leipzig citizens and designed by Dresden sculptor Georg Wrba. The fountain features an octagonal basin made of shell limestone, with a central column adorned with a bronze 'fairytale wreath' depicting characters from German fairytales. Topped by a bronze group of a flute-playing youth and playing children, it's also known as the 'Rattenfängerbrunnen' (Pied Piper Fountain). The fountain serves as a serene gathering place, reflecting Leipzig's rich history and artistic heritage, and offering a picturesque scene for visitors and locals alike.
